In November of 2016, the Commission became owners of the storied amphitheater.

Founded in 2013, the Commission is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and its leadership consists of a seven-member board of directors—Debbie Ellinghaus (Chair), Joanne Davis (Vice Chair/Secretary) Jeffrey Lavis (Treasurer), Maurice Bellan, Louis Ulman, Milton Matthews (ex-officio, Columbia Association) and John DeWolf (ex-officio The Howard Hughes Corporation). The Commission received initial start-up funding from Howard County Government, and it is currently engaged in redeveloping Merriweather Post Pavilion. In addition, the organization is developing a strategic plan to accomplish its broader mission.
