A Residency with The Reminders

March 2023 - Hip-Hop Duo The Reminders take over Howard County Schools

“We’re going to turn your classroom into a concert!”—Aja Black, The Reminders.

And with that, The Reminders kicked off their enriching and inspiring week-long residency in seven local middle schools in March. Presented in partnership by the Merriweather Arts and Culture Center, the Columbia Festival of the Arts, and the Howard County Public School System, this residency offered more than 1,200 middle school students an enriching and educational experience with The Reminders, an acclaimed and inspirational husband and wife duo who have been performing across the country for more than a decade.

The Reminders consists of Aja Black and Big Sameer, a husband and wife duo hailing from Colorado. They seamlessly blend soulful sounds and roots music with insightful messages and thoughtful lyrics, inspiring students with their passion for music and performance. While in Howard County, The Reminders the performed with their daughter, DJ Xoomie, for more than sixth, seventh, and eighth grade music students, sharing songs and stories about their lives and careers as touring artists.

The response from students and teachers was overwhelmingly positive. Following their performance at one local school, students offered high praise: “They were incredible and creative! The singer was naturally gifted, and they were awesome.” All of the photos from this residency can be found on our Media page!
